Empowering Change Through the Annual Reparations Symposium and the National Resource Center for State and Local Reparations
In a transformative stride towards justice and equality, the Fourth Annual National Symposium for State and Local Reparations is set to unfold from December 4 to December 6 at the Hilton-Orrington in Evanston, IL. Spearheaded by Robin Rue Simmons, Founder and Executive Director of FirstRepair, this symposium promises to be a pivotal moment in the pursuit of reparatory justice.
The symposium will convene over 200 community stakeholders, reparations advocates, scholars, public interest lawyers, elected officials, and governmental representatives from across the nation. Together, they aim to foster a network of local and state reparatory justice initiatives, propelling the reparations movement forward.
Under the theme "Solutions Only," this year’s symposium will focus on actionable strategies to make reparations a common practice in society. Dr. Joy DeGruy, a distinguished researcher and educator renowned for her work on multigenerational trauma, will be among the esteemed speakers. Her insights on healing, reparations, and the enduring legacy of historical injustices promise to inspire and ignite change.
The Symposium will showcase presentations from experts such as Tina Lifford, Alvin B. Tillery, Nkechi Taifa, Dr. Amara Enya, and Attorney Areva Martin. These thought leaders will share their expertise on local and state reparations initiatives, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and information-sharing in driving the reparations movement forward.
Noteworthy is the Town Hall Meeting on December 5, hosted by the City of Evanston Reparations Committee, the Reparations Stakeholder Authority of Evanston (RSAE), and NAARC. This event, open to the public, will provide a platform for intimate conversations, personal reflections, and shared experiences on the impact of reparations.
Moreover, the inauguration of the National Resource Center for State and Local Reparations will be a significant highlight of the Symposium. This center is poised to serve as a hub for knowledge-sharing, research, and advocacy, further bolstering the reparations movement across the country.
As we embark on this journey towards healing and restitution, let us stand together in solidarity, embracing the transformative power of reparations. The Annual Reparations Symposium and the establishment of the National Resource Center for State and Local Reparations mark crucial steps towards a more just and equitable future for all.
